Effects of Soybean Hulls, Wet Brewer’s Grain or a Combination Supplement on the Performance of Forage-fed Steers during Backgrounding

چکیده
supplementation scenarios. Introduction Backgrounding of cattle is generally utilized to prepare the calf for subsequent segments of the beef cattle industry. Cravey (1996) suggested that backgrounded calves may demonstrate greater feedlot profitability as a result of greater feedlot ADG, gain:feed, decreased medicinal cost and mortality compared to nonbackgrounded cattle. Step et al. (2008) indicated that calves from a single source that were retained after weaning for 45 d had less feedlot morbidity and health cost during the initial feedlot receiving period compared to commingled or direct-transported calves after weaning. The profitability of backgrounding calves is complicated by many factors including calf purchase/sale price, feed cost, and medicine costs (Peel, 2003). In order for backgrounding to be a feasible practice, consistent profits must be expected.

Dried Distillers Grains and(or) Soybean Hulls to Background Beef Calves Fed Bahiagrass Forage
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of supplementing dried distillers grains soybean hulls, or combinations of the two to growing beef steers consuming bahiagrass hay. Angus steers were randomly allotted to one of four supplement treatments. Treatments included: 1) dried distillers grains; 2) dried distillers grains/soybean hulls; 3) soybean hulls/distillers grains; 4) soyb...
متن کاملEffects of supplemental energy and/or degradable intake protein on performance, grazing behavior, intake, digestibility, and fecal and blood indices by beef steers grazed on dormant native tallgrass prairie.
To evaluate the effects of balancing total diet degradable intake protein with dietary total digestible nutrients (TDN), we conducted two studies during 2 yr with 100 (302 +/- 8 kg initial BW) mixed-breed yearling steers and 12 ruminally cannulated steers (526 +/- 28 kg). Steers individually received one of four supplements 5 d/wk while grazing dormant native tallgrass prairie. Supplements incl...
متن کاملEffects of supplementation on intake, digestion, and performance of beef cattle consuming fertilized, stockpiled bermudagrass forage.
Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of increasing supplement protein concentration on performance and forage intake of beef cows and forage utilization of steers consuming stockpiled bermudagrass forage. Bermudagrass pastures were fertilized with 56 kg of N/ha in late August. Grazing was initiated during early November and continued through the end of January each year. Treatmen...
متن کاملCo-product and Rumen Degradable Protein Supplementation of Beef Steers Fed Bahiagrass Forage
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding co-products with Optigen ® II on animal performance and blood metabolites in growing beef calves. Angus steers were allowed ad libitum access to bahiagrass hay and were supplemented for 42 d via Calan gates. Treatments included 1) dried distillers grains; 2) dried distillers grains + Optigen; 3) soybean hulls; 4) soybean hulls + Opt...
متن کاملEffect of Wet Brewers Grains or Dried Distillers Grains as Supplements to Round Bale Silage or Dry Hay on Intake and Digestibility in Steers
The objective of this study was to examine the effect of different forage and supplement combinations on forage and supplement intake and ruminal parameters in steers. Six ruminally fistulated steers were assigned to 1 of 4 treatments during 4 different data collection periods. Treatments were 1) Hay +wet brewers grains (WBG); 2) Hay +dried distillers grains (DDG); 3) round bale silage (RBS) + ...
